Heavy Equipment Operator Competency Certification
Heavy Equipment Operator Competency Certification
Know your operators are capable. Not just experienced.
There is no shortage of operator certifications in this industry. There is a massive shortage of ones that actually mean anything.
College programs hand out tickets to students who have never run production iron on a live site. Internal company checkouts are compromised by the pressure to keep seats filled. Prime contractors are left guessing. Employers carry the liability. Elite operators go underpaid because they can't prove what they can actually do.
ClearPath certifications are different -- and earthworks companies and prime contractors recognize that difference.
Our assessments are earned through direct, in-person evaluation of practical skills by someone who has spent 17 years operating the same equipment. They meet CSA and OSHA standards, they expire every 3 years, and they are valid anywhere in North America. There are no shortcuts. There are no mercy passes. When a ClearPath certification shows up in a bid package, it carries weight because everyone in the industry knows what it took to earn it.
Why Certification Matters
For Earthworks Companies | Win More Bids
Prime contractors are looking for the lowest-risk subcontractor, not just the lowest price. When you submit a bid backed by external ClearPath competency certifications, you eliminate the conflict of interest built into internal sign-offs. You are showing your client that you are so confident in your crew that you brought in an outside authority to validate them. That is a different conversation than every other subcontractor at the table is having.
External validation carries more weight than vested-interest internal checkouts and primes know it. It reduces your insurance exposure, strengthens your prequalification scores, and puts you on the shortlist for the largest and most profitable projects.
For Prime Contractors | Zero Guesswork on Your Site
Don't let a subcontractor's mercy pass become your next safety incident, grade failure, or project delay. Requiring ClearPath certifications means every operator running gear on your project has been evaluated against CSA and OSHA standards by a veteran finish operator with no stake in the outcome. Cold eyes. Hard standard. No exceptions.
For Operators | Get Paid What You're Worth
In a field full of steering wheel holders, be the professional. A Tier 1 Finish Certification is your gold card. It proves you are the elite and elite operators get hired faster, stay on the clock longer when cuts come, and command the highest rates in the industry. Stop telling foremen what you can do. Show them the paper that proves it.
Our Tiered Competency Standards
Each certification is machine-specific. We certify skill on a specific piece of equipment, not just a name on a vest. Tiers are cumulative; you cannot test into Tier 1 without demonstrating Tier 2 and Tier 3 competencies.
Tier 3 | Foundational Operator The safety foundation. We evaluate pre-trip inspection, machine controls, emergency procedures, safe movement and function, and ground working buffer zone awareness. This validates that the operator can safely control the machine for fundamental site-level tasks.
Tier 2 | Bulk Operator (Includes Tier 3) The production powerhouse. Everything in Tier 3 plus confirmed proficiency in high-volume production work bulking, stripping, ripping, casting, truck loading, and tandem equipment operation. This designates an operator who can independently manage full production duties at any site.
Tier 1 | Finish Operator (Includes Tiers 2 and 3) The gold standard. All Tier 2 and 3 competencies plus mastery of high-precision finishing grade work by GPS, laser, gradesman, and survey stakes, work near utilities, confined and complex areas, and interpretation of civil plans. For operators who deliver the final product within cents.

The Process
Reach Out | Contact us to discuss the operator, equipment type, and tier. We coordinate the best location for the assessment; your active work site, your yard, or our designated location.
Book and Pay | Once confirmed, you receive a direct booking link to schedule your evaluation date.
In-Person Evaluation | We show up in person. We talk to the operator face to face and evaluate their performance with eyes that have been in the seat for 17 years. No checkboxes. No shortcuts.
Certification or Deferral | We maintain an uncompromising standard. We do not mercy pass. If the operator does not meet the standard for the tier applied for, they do not receive a certificate.
All certifications expire after 3 years, consistent with CSA and OSHA recertification standards, and are valid anywhere in North America.

Fail Policy
We take the integrity of this certification seriously. Because our certificate carries the weight of a professional guarantee, we have a firm fail policy.
No refunds for failed attempts
Three failed attempts within a set period results in a 6-month deferral from reapplying
The deferral period is designed for growth | private coaching, college training, or mentored seat time at their place of employment
We do not issue certifications to operators who are not ready. That is what makes ours worth something.
Certified means capable. Nothing less.
